![]() You'll most likely need to repaint the entire wall or ceiling. Small hairline cracks in plaster walls can be purely cosmetic and caused by the slight contraction and expansion of the wood framing of the house during seasonal changes. Again, let the compound dry, sand it smooth and dust. Dust the wall off and apply a second, slightly wider coat of plaster compound to the wall. Once the compound is dry, lightly sand it until it is smooth. Paint fades over time, so if it's been a long time since the wall or ceiling has been painted, it will be nearly impossible to match the color for a seamless finish. Scrape the plaster compound into the crack and flatten it on to the wall with your paint scraper. Sand until you're happy with the results. As you're sanding, run your fingers along the area to test its smoothness. ![]() Sanding will smooth out the patch and eliminate any high or low spots. For slightly deeper cracks around 10-30mm first work the mixture into the crack, making sure to secure the edges with the filler. Now get your filler and mix as instructed. Use minimal pressure to prevent gouging the joint compound. Now gently brush the crack to remove plaster and finally vacuum to get rid of as much dust as possible. Sand the patched area with fine-grit sandpaper. ![]() Allow the joint compound to dry overnight.Īpply a second coat of joint compound, following the same steps you used for the first coat, and allow it to dry. Use a filling knife to apply the filler along the line of the crack. Mix a quantity of filler as per the manufacturers instructions and before applying it, dampen (but dont soak) the inside of the crack using a small paint brush dipped in clean water. Repeat this on the right side, this time with your index finger right of center on the handle. Using a dry paint brush brush along the line of the crack to remove any loose dust and dirt. ![]() Extend your index finger up to the base of the handle with it placed left of center, then pull the putty knife down the patched area. Repeat this on the right side of the crack, then make one more pass directly over the middle of the patched area.įeather out the edges of the first coat while it is still wet by placing the putty knife on the left edge of the patched area. Use moderate pressure on the putty knife so you leave layer of joint compound that is no more than 1/8-inch thick. With your index finger extended up at the center of the base of the handle, pull the putty knife down the crack, working from one end of the crack to the other. Place the 10-inch putty knife at one end of the mesh tape, so the left edge of the putty knife overlaps the taped area. The mesh tape should be centered over the crack.įill the mud pan with joint compound, then load the end of the 10-inch putty knife with a moderate amount of compound. Place the mesh tape directly over the crack and run your hand over it to stick it to the surface. ![]()
